I first very carefully apply a thin layer of polyacrylic sealer with a brush to each piece so I can keep as much rust intact as possible. After that layer dries, I pour a small amount of the sealer into a plastic baggie, put the piece inside and squish it all around to give it a good coating and get the sealer into all the nooks and crannies. Then I drag it to the top of the bag, squeezing off the excess as I go. The piece then is hung to dry thoroughly. I usually do this 2 more times. If I put the piece into the baggie first, the sealer gets filled with rust particles.

Such a great way to find interesting components to use in your jewelry designs. By the time you turn your finds into jewelry, they truly are authentic rustic treasures. Fascinating to see these unique finished pieces you made!
