Beaded Belt Buckle by Marlies Bates - featured on Jewelry Making Journal

An original beaded belt buckle

My first original beaded belt buckle that was planned out on graph paper and using colored pencils to create such a colorful pattern.

Then, using 11/0 seed beads in the corresponding colors worked this up on a bead loom.

The piece is then stitched onto leather and added the buckle piece sandwiched in between another piece of leather for the back of it.

Hopefully, the first of many more.

  • Beautiful, Marlies – the color palette reminds me of Southwestern sand, sky, and canyons. I love the bead pattern you created for the belt buckle. I’ve always admired your seed bead artistry!

  • I do thank you for the kind words Rena. My talent is a gift from the Creator and I am just His hands. When someone compliments the jewelry, I will tell them that. Mostly, I will pull out my bead containers and go “‘ who wants to play.” The beads will tell me which ones work and which ones don’t.

Stunning work! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who has the beads tell me what works and what doesn’t. 🙂

  • I love the way you designed this intricate pattern in coloured pencils then created it in soft Southwestern colours. Absolutely stunning!

  • Thank you for the compliments. When doing this or any other piece, it is hard sometimes not to want to keep it for myself as advertising. I was not given this talent to keep it all to myself, but to share it. My original pieces all start out on graph paper and colored pencils; just wish they would erase better!!
