I’ve been working with it for 20 years and never cease to be amazed at how far we can push its boundaries! If someone doesn’t like a piece because “it’s polymer” then possibly the artist didn’t do a good job of translating the medium into their own. Most people spend much time guessing what my work is actually made of, and many don’t care – they just like it for what it is:) If I do get the “art snob” who says “Oh that’s the stuff kids use”… well, yeah – kids also use water color, acrylics, pastels, etc. Look up the Polymer work in the Racine Art Museum – go to Pinterest & put in “Racine Art Museum Polymer Clay”. Look at the work done by the artists who attend The International Polymer Clay Association Retreats at
pinterest.com/TheIPCA/
and, just choosing one polymer artist out of thousands, look at the work of Kathrin Neumaier on Flickr:

A month ago I got some polymer clay in different colors, I thought it would be nice to do this winter. Last week I found plain white air dry clay at Wal-Mart to practice shaping with until I used the colored ones you bake. It is addictive. I’ve been seeing one pendant in my mind that I would love to make, but not sure how to do it yet. Do you layer strips of a different color then cut out shapes of top layer to see next layer of color? I hope that’s not confusing. I wish I could stick to one thing, but I want to try it all!

The materials are not costly, and many tools can be found around the house. What’s hard is pushing to the next level and making original work! I would recommend joining a polymer clay group on Facebook, and doing a LOT of reading on The Blue Bottle Tree website. Ginger has the best collection of information about polymer clay anywhere!

Your wonderful photos really show the textures in these pieces – and the expertise in your work. I love your attention to detail – such as the beautiful texture inside the bangle bracelet.
