It can be used alone or in addition to the Krylon.

I use Krylon anti yellowing clear coat. Would love to see how it turned out.

However, I would experiment with one crimp cover first, and see how well it works before coloring any others. Also, be sure to clean the metal first, and also seal it after your alcohol ink dries, as I mentioned in my Coloring Metal with Alcohol Ink Tutorial.
