I want to thank you for this amazing tutorial. I have told many friends about it and we are all now etching thanks to you!

I wanted to ask you if there is any other type of Staedler permanent pen that can work with the etching. I have not been able to find the CD one that you recommend, but see on Amazon that they sell other ones too. I want to etch very small handwriting and tried with a Sharpie but it did not work.

Thank you!!!
Gaby

first of all thank you for your great and detailed tutorial!
I tried your technique at it seems to work on silver, except that the red STAEDTLER permanent pen Lumocolor doesn’t resist to the nitrate of fer. First I tought it was because my pen was a bit old so I bought this morning a fresh one. But still doesn’t resist. Now I am wondering, I am based in France, if the pencils here are not the same as in America? Or the ingredients may have changed in the meantime?
Thank you for your tipp and have a great day,
kindest regards,
Yasmin

Thanks for demystifying the etching of sterling silver for me. Other sources left me scratching my head, but this is just great!

I am about to switch to silver in the etching process and this by far has been the best tutorial I have seen. I appreciate especially the discussion of the errors. 🙂

I see that some pieces have a very organic background texture to them, while others are smooth. What is the secret to the difference? Is it just time in the etching bath?
Thanks for sharing!
Judith
